The first race of the year is always such a scramble. No matter how good the components of a motorcycle are, and no matter how perfect and pretty it can look before it ever takes to the track, it’s always a pile of garbage the first session. You can stare at the bike and not find a single thing wrong with it in any way, not able to find a single thing that could possible be improved on, and when you come off the track be busy for an hour just to try to inch it closer to the way it’s supposed to be. I like to get that over with usually at a track day or event that’s not part of my championship hunt. I’ve been to Daytona every year for about the last 5 or so to take care of that, so this year I changed it up and made the trek to Vegas to blow out the cobwebs at a WERA event.
Sure enough, there were a multitude of adjustments required throughout the weekend, and I can’t say that I ever got the bike working perfectly. However, I uncovered a few weaknesses in the set-up and began making progress. The racing really was not the main driver of the trip down, but things went fairly well in that category as well. I ended up 8th in A Superstock (basically an Open Supersport event), 6th in B Superstock (750 Supersport), and 5th in B Superbike.
I was hampered significantly by lack of components, with the bike largely stock, but I had a great time at the very tight and technical track, and feel that the weekend was a success.
With a baseline set-up to start off my season - I look forward to running the bikes at a track that I know.
