OK, all you schmidtastic junkies: my apologies for keeping you waiting so long. You were probably wondering if I’d fallen off the face (I know my web guy did!). But no, alas, I’m simply late as all get-out on the reports, but determined to make a valiant comeback!! I’ll take you WAAAYYYY back to May:
I show up at the track on a beautiful day, not having looked at a weather forecast, to see people mounting rain tires and people talking of rain. I look up at the sky – “ah, whatever” are my thoughts………... Bad call.
We get off the line for the first race of the day, 750 Supersport. I get the holeshot and don’t look back ‘til the halfway flags. Nobody’s there. I won it by a mile.
The next two races were beyond stressful. For different reasons, I made bad calls on tire choices. The first was a dry track that went wet, the second a wet but drying track – that ended up starting to rain again. Either way, I was stuck out there racing with DOT tires in full wet conditions. I hated it, but kept the bikes upright to finish 9th and 10th. Peeeyooooo.
The final race of the day for me was wet, with no question as to what tires to use. Although I finally had the proper equipment for the conditions, it didn’t help my final result that much (I finished 7th). It was my very first time on the new track surface with wet tires on a wet track and I’d spent the better portion of the day scaring myself silly with the DOT’s on in the wet. Couple that with the fact that everyone else was all practiced up with their wet tires, and I got it handed to me.
In the end the results were pretty decent as far as the points were concerned. I maintained a healthy lead in the overall championship because I kept it upright. Sometimes you just need to get out with what you can, and save the fight for another day. That was the story of this long rainy day in May.
