Superbike Race #1 - 1st
Superbike Race #2 - 1st
A lot of people were talking about being tired from the previous day's racing. Maybe winning my races helped give me a boost of energy? I was just excited to get the next round of racing going again. After the two wins from the day before I'd edged my way right in with the leaders of the points race, and was hopeful that another positive day or racing might put me into the lead.
Morning warm-up was uneventful, and we got straight into the hunt with the Pro Superbike race #1. At the drop of the flag I got off the line fairly well. However, in the run to the first turn I was overtaken by the GSXR1000 of Ken Lalonde. I initially broke deeper than him but he did well to ease off of the lever without blowing the apex, and took to the lead position for the first turn. Immediately I was all over him looking for a way past. I got to hand it to him though, we got to around the ½ way flag and I was surprised at how well he was getting into and out of the turns. I had pace on him, but he was going to be hard to get by. I even made a mistake at one point, almost falling down while trying to drive up the inside of him out of the last turn, that cost me a fair bit of time. I closed the gap back up again quite fast though, and it's a good thing that I did as the one small mistake he made I was right there to capitalize on. He ran wide in the first of a series of turns that eventually leads onto a short straight with a braking/passing zone at the end of it. I wiggled up the inside on the brakes, put down a couple fast laps, and secured the win by a safe margin.
The two Superbike races are quite far apart in the schedule. It's nice to have a fair bit of time in the middle of the day to settle down, but it's a little strange for me as it's the complete opposite from the races in Portland. There I race three different sized GSXRs in a total of 6 classes. I'm in every other race for the entire day and never get to take my leathers off. Here I could almost take a nap!
Pro Superbike race #2 wasn't nearly as eventful, but went just fine in my books. I got the holeshot, put my head down to ditch the field, and stretched it out by the end to secure the win and go four for four on the weekend!
I really have to give mass props to my buddy Wayne for helping out in the pits for so many years. We run a pretty casual program and have a lot of fun at the races. Wayne's been there for me for everything from changing wheels/brakes, crash damage, loading/unloading, and even once to wake me up out of a dead sleep while it was last call to my race!
After it was all said and done I achieved my goal of gaining the #1 position in the points race for the plate over the weekend. There's three rounds remaining in the championship now after this, so anything can happen. But it feels good to be back where I feel I belong after having missed the first round due to a conflict. Next it's off to Portland. Cheers for now!
